…some of our Survivors are from Vilna?
In the ghettoes of Vilna over sixty-thousand Jews had been murdered when the remaining Survivors, mostly young people, began to fight back. They gradually became united and formed a commando unit which escaped to the forests. There they began fighting the German Nazis by causing mayhem through sabotage and attacks.
It is one of the earliest organized groups of Jews fighting back against the Nazis. Some of our Survivors tell of their experiences. Head of the resistance then was Abba Kovner, pictured (center in suit with dark hair).
