…as food became scarce in ghettos almost anything could be considered valuable- and illegal?

Here we see a teen in the Warsaw Ghetto being relieved of contraband food or some valuable item for bartering.  Losing food or valuables could mean the difference between living or dying.

It is unclear if it is a Jewish civilian or a Jewish policeman taking these things from him, but you can see the desperation on the teenager’s face.

In such cases a Jewish person could consider themselves lucky to have it only confiscated, as in some cases he would have been executed.
